Belly Dancers of NY, NJ, PA, DE, etc Unite!
Do not miss this rare opportunity to see a live performance by one of world music's leading voices. Internationally acclaimed vocalist Azam Ali (singer for Niyaz and Vas as well as guest vocalist for Conjure One, System of A Down, The Crystal Method, Chris Vrenna, Mickey Hart and many others) brings her timeless, ethereal voice to the stage on November 21st in Philadelphia. Azam performs at the Ibrahim Theater, located in the International House (3701 Chestnut St., Philadelphia). This intimate theatre setting offers comfortable seating, clear sight lines and excellent acoustics.
Opening the show will be Raquy and the Cavemen, a duo of virtuoso drummers / multi-instrumentalists who bring some rock energy to traditional Middle Eastern rhythms. Switching between between energetic drumming compositions and intoxicating melodic pieces, the duo employs a variety of unusual instruments including the Kemenche (an ancestor of the violin), Dumset (Middle Eastern drumset), Dumbek and 11 String Guitar. They also utilize the unique art of Mongolian Throat singing. They have performed at Central Park SummerStage and LollaPalooza and have collaborated with Omar Faruk Tekbilek, Saiid El-Artist and many others.

Who We Are:
The roots of what we call "belly dance" are obscure. Reputed to be the world's oldest dance form, it has evolved over millennia and has been influenced by many cultures. The experimental belly dance troupe, BASTET, grew out of a desire to evolve with the dance.
Founded in the summer of 2008 by a group of art students, BASTET takes inspiration from the dances of the Middle East, Africa, and India in order to create unique choreography and to convey stories through dance. The dancers come from a variety of belly dance traditions including folkloric, tribal fusion and cabaret and draw from other movement forms such as theater, circus arts, martial arts, hip hop and bollywood.
BASTET regularly collaborates with musicians and bands throughout New York City in the genres of rock, soul, electronica, Middle Eastern and African music. They also collaborate with other dance and theatre acts such as the Desert Sin Dance Theatre and urban-cabaret act Billi Shakes.
A sub-division of BASTET is Belly Dance for Change, which regularly brings together performers from all around the city to raise money for charity.
BASTET's members have performed at Theater Lab, the Lafayette Grill, Le Poisson Rouge, the Golden Festival, the CMJ Music Festival, Arabian Nights, the Shrine, Deity, the Katra Lounge, the Gelato Arts Collective, the Mehanata, D'jam at Je'Bon, Dances of Vice, The House of Yes, The Witches' Ball, China I, Space Womb, cruise boats and many other NYC-based events and venues. They begin performing abroad in 2011. ( Read full audition instructionsCollapse )
Early on Halloween, plenty of time for Trick or Treating or other parties later =)
FOUNDATIONAL SOLIDITY: Move Like *Your* Body
Every body is built uniquely; thus, everyone moves uniquely. Middle Eastern dance has a common, "core" language, but each person expresses it with a different "accent."( Read more...Collapse )
